Take Advantage of an Affordable Connecting Ticket by Train or Long-Distance Bus

Starting 1 January 2026, you can add an affordable connecting ticket to your train ticket or OnniBus ticket. The trial includes tickets for JOJO buses in zones A, B, or AB. Tickets for zones C and D will remain at the regular single-ticket price.

VR will charge a €0.60 service fee for the ticket. The connecting ticket for an OnniBus journey is free of charge.

Tickets can only be purchased through digital channels, i.e., vr.fi, onnibus.fi, or the VR Matkalla app or OnniBus app. Through OnniBus, you can also buy Savonlinja tickets for long-distance routes toward Kuopio and Jyväskylä.

The launch of the trial was decided by the Joensuu Regional Public Transport Committee at its meeting on 9 December. The committee believes the trial will not cause unreasonable ticket revenue losses or overcrowd the current bus services.

“The purpose of the trial is also to raise awareness among people traveling in the area that the railway station can be reached by bus instead of by car. The trial is not expected to generate significant additional costs for JOJO, but it may attract new public transport users to Joensuu,” says Traffic System Engineer Rasmus Nousiainen from Joensuu Regional Public Transport.

The trial may be extended if, during spring 2026, it is confirmed that the pilot does not incur costs or overcrowd JOJO buses excessively. A decision on a possible extension will be made before the end of the pilot period. If no new decision is made, the pilot will end at the close of the summer season on 11 August 2026. The regional public transport committee will decide on the pilot and its continuation.
