Contactless payment

Contactless payment

Contactless payment

You can pay for your trips on JOJO buses with contactless payment. Contactless payment is not available for on demand responsive buses (Noutopoika).

You can only pay for one person’s trip or trips at a time with contactless payment. If you want to buy a ticket for another person (for example child) as well, please use another means of contactless payment or payment method.

You can use contactless payment to buy a single ticket or a day ticket. There is a price cap for trips made during 90 minutes (and 24 hours) paid with contactless payment. The total price will first be calculated and charged based on the number of trips made during 90 minutes (the most affordable price based on the number of zones). After this, the 24-hour price cap will be applied to the charge.

Even if you show the means of payment to a ticket device dozens of times within these time limits, you will only pay up to the maximum price cap for the zones you have selected for all the tickets you have purchased.

Do this on each of your trips for the price cap to function correctly

Bus lines 1-13

  1. Press the contactless payment button on the screen of the ticket device
  2. If necessary, change the default zones offered by the ticket device. The default is your location. If necessary, select more zones or change the zones

Bus lines 101-104 and 201, 202, 204

What is contactless payment?

Contactless payment is a payment method for processing small payments (less than € 50). If your payment card has the wave symbol for contactless payment marked on it, you can use it for contactless payment. When using contactless payment in public transport, you do not need the card pin code; you only need to show the card to the contactless payment terminal.

The reader devices never ask for your pin code in public transport when using contactless payment.

You can also use a mobile device, a so-called mobile wallet, as a means of contactless payment. This is done by installing a contactless payment application on the device and saving in it the information about the card or account from which the payments will be charged.

Payment applications include Danske Bank’s MobilePay, Nordea Wallet and Google Pay. Check the banks and payment cards that support contactless payments with Google Pay on Google’s website.

Apple Pay is only available for Apple devices. At least payment cards issued by Nordea, Aktia, Danske Bank and Osuuspankki can be linked to the service. Check Apple’s website for any changes.

What is the price of contactless payment?

The ticket price is the same for all age groups:

Number of zones

Price cap 90 minutes

Price cap Hilja-time*)

Price cap 24 hours

1 zone A, B

2,90 €

2,00 €

  8,00 €

2 zones A-B

3,96 €

3,00 €

12,00 €

Hilja-time*) = Monday-Friday 10-14 and 18-24. Saturday and Sunday all day.

You can check the payments charged and the trips made from the online service afterwards. You can also print out a receipt from the service if necessary.

Example 1: You make two trips in zone A during 90 minutes. You will be charged the price cap for one zone, which is € 2,90 (normal time).

Example 2: You make one trip in zones A–B and another one in one zone A during 90 minutes. In total, you travel in two zones, A and B. You will be charged € 3,96, which is the price cap for two zones.

Example 3: You make one trip on Saturday in zone A during Hilja-time. You will be charged the price cap for one zone, € 2,00.

Example 4: You make four trips in zones A–B within 24 hours. The trips are more than 90 minutes apart, which means that you would be charged € 3,96 for each trip = € 15,84 in total. The price cap for two zones, € 12, is exceeded, which means that only € 12 will be charged for the four trips. If you make more trips within the same day, no new charges will be made as the price cap has already been reached.

Example 5: You make two trips in zone A in the same day, which would result in a charge of 2 x € 2.90 = € 5,80. After that, you make another two trips in zones A–B, the fare of which would be 2 x  € 3,96 = € 7,92. The total charge would be € 13,72, but as the price cap is exceeded, your account will only be charged € 12.00, which is the price cap for two zones within 24 hours.

Where can I view the fares charged?

You can check the charges of your trips paid with a payment card from the online service afterwards. Use the payment card details to log in to the service. You can also print a receipt for your payment from the service. Please note that the date of the charge on your bank account may not be the same as the date of the trip.

Trips paid with a mobile app (e.g. Apple Pay, Google Pay) cannot be viewed online (excluding Mastercard if you have logged in to the online service with the payment card details). You can check the charges from the services provided by your bank or the issuer of the payment card you have linked to the app, for example.

Can I receive a receipt for my trip?

Due to the price cap model, the prices for trips are calculated in the background system, and therefore you cannot receive a receipt for a single trip on a bus or tram. In other words, the ticket device does not print out a receipt or a separate ticket. You can print out a receipt for the trips paid with a payment card from the online service afterwards. Use the payment card details to log in to the service.

Which payment cards are accepted?

You can pay for your trip on a bus with a debit or credit card (Visa, Mastercard and Eurocard) that has a contactless payment feature. In this case, your card has the wave symbol for contactless payment marked on it.

You can also use a contactless payment feature on your mobile device. The device must have an app that has your payment card linked to it. Trips paid with a mobile app (e.g. Apple Pay, Google Pay) cannot be viewed in the online service, excluding Mastercard if you have logged in to the service with the payment card details.

Use the same payment card or mobile device to pay for your trips. This allows the system to calculate the most affordable price for you based on the number of trips you have made in accordance with the price cap model.

Can I pay my friend’s trip with contactless payment?

Due to the price cap model, you can only pay for one person’s trip at a time with contactless payment. As the system monitors the number of trips made over a given period of time, it is not possible to purchase tickets for more than one passenger using the same means of contactless payment.

If you pay for your own trip with another payment method, such as a Waltti travel card or Waltti Mobiili, you can pay for your friend’s single ticket with contactless payment.

When should I use contactless payment?

If you travel in the JOJO region only occasionally, it is convenient to use contactless payment for buying a ticket directly from the bus or tram. Contactless payment is also a suitable option for those regularly travelling with JOJO in the following situations, for example:

  • You do not have your travel card with you for some reason.
  • You do not have the possibility to use Waltti Mobiili.
  • There is not enough value on your travel card.
  • Your travel card has been lost.
  • The zones on your season ticket are not suitable for the trip and there is not enough value on your travel card to pay for an exceptional trip.

What if my card does not work?

Show the payment card to the ticket device reader only after you have selected the contactless payment method and the required zones on the screen of the device. If you have shown the payment card to the reader before the selections, the device will provide instructions on how to proceed.

If the device reports that your card does not work, there may be several reasons for that, including the following:

  • Your payment card does not have a contactless payment feature.
  • Reading of the card failed. Show the card to the reader again.
  • Your payment card has expired.
  • There is no money on your payment card.
  • Your previous trip has not been charged for some reason.
  • The payment card’s daily spending limit has been met. You can change the spending limit through your online bank.
